One killed in stabbing over Eid congregation
A man named Abdul Qayyum (50) was stabbed to death in Sadarghat village of Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj over a disagreement over holding Eid congregation.
Tension prevails in the area over the incident that took place in front of the Paschimpara Jame Mosque in Sadarghat village around 9:30pm on Friday (March 28).
The deceased Abdul Qayyum is the son of late Abdul Majid of Dakshinpara village in Sadarghat.
Police and locals said most of the people of Dakshinpara and Paschimpara of Sadarghat village offer Eid congregation every year at Syed Ali Eidgah located in Dakshinpara area of Sadarghat. Recently, due to complications arising over the waqf papers of the land of Syed Ali Eidgah, there was a disagreement among the people of Paschimpara regarding holding Eid congregation at the Eidgah. After Tarawih prayers on Friday night, elders of Dakshinpara and Paschimpara of Sadarghat village gathered at the Paschimpara Jame Mosque to discuss the issue of holding Eid congregation at the Eidgah.
Meanwhile, after discussing the Eid-ul-Fitr congregation at the Eidgah, the elders were coming out of the mosque when Mujahid Mia, son of Kazi Sundar Ali of the village, stabbed Abdul Qayyum of Dakshinpara village in front of the mosque. He was seriously injured. He was rescued and taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Debpara Union Parishad Chairman Shah Riaz Nadir Sumon said, Abdul Qayyum died in a stabbing attack. He was a religious person.
Nabiganj Police Station OC Kamal Hossain said, "Initially, we have learned that one person died in a stabbing incident in Sadarghat village. We are at the scene and will be able to provide details later."
