One of two children found by roadside in Anwara dies

One of the two children found by the roadside in Anwara, Chattogram, has died. Fourteen-month-old Morshed died on Monday afternoon at the NICU of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, nine days after he was rescued, Anwara upazila nirbahi officer Tahmina Akter confirmed.
On December 30, the child was first admitted to the 250-bed Chattogram General Hospital on the initiative of the district administration and was transferred the following day to the CMCH NICU for advanced treatment.
The UNO said the child’s grandmother had been staying with him at the hospital since Sunday and the process of handing over the body to the family is underway.
The two children were rescued on the evening of December 28 from the roadside near Mazar Gate in Barkhain union by local auto-rickshaw driver Mahim Uddin. The other child, Ayesha, aged three and a half, is Morshed’s sister. They were initially sheltered at Mahim Uddin’s home and later received primary treatment arranged by the upazila administration. Ayesha is still in the care of the rescuer’s family.
Morshed had congenital health complications and injury marks were found on his body. Mahim Uddin said he approached the children after seeing them shivering in the cold by the roadside.
Following the incident, the Chattogram deputy commissioner took responsibility for the children on December 30. Their father Khorshed Alam was arrested the same night from Banshkhali. He claimed his wife Jhinuk Akter had left home with the children six months earlier and never returned. Khorshed Alam is currently in jail in a case filed over abandoning the children.
