One unit of Rampal shut down, electricity production reduced by half

Production of one unit of the Rampal coal-based thermal power plant in Bagerhat has been shut down due to technical fault. As a result electricity production of the plant has reduced and come down to almost half.

Member (Production) of Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) Md Johurul Islam has informed that one unit of the plant shut down on Sunday afternoon.

He said more than 1,100 megawatts of electricity was being produced from the Rampal plant before the disruption. After one unit shut down production has come down below 600 megawatts.

Johurul Islam said, ‘Electricity has started coming from Adani of India. Unit number two of Rampal has been shut down for maintenance work.’

When asked by when the unit may be restarted he said after shutting down the unit it has to be cooled. Two engineers are scheduled to come from India. Maintenance work will start after they arrive.

He said, ‘I am assuming it will take three to four days to restart.’

According to sources of the office of the Rampal coal-based thermal power plant the total production capacity of the two units of the plant is 1,300 megawatts. However when both units are running together a maximum of 1,100 to 1,200 megawatts of electricity is produced.

When one unit is running it is possible to produce up to 550 to 600 megawatts of electricity.
