Home affairs adviser Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, retired, has said that ‘Operation Devil Hunt Phase 2’ will be launched immediately to ensure a peaceful environment for the national election, maintain law and order and suppress what he described as fascist terrorists.

He made the remarks while briefing the press after a meeting of the law and order core committee at the Home Ministry conference room at the Secretariat on December 13.

Earlier, on February 8 this year, the interim government launched ‘Operation Devil Hunt Phase 1’ to curb militancy, improve the law and order situation and bring criminals under the law.

During the briefing, the home affairs adviser said that candidates contesting the election would be issued firearm licences if they apply for them. He also said that firearms previously deposited with the government by those contesting the election would be returned.

Responding to a question from journalists about security measures for BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman if he returns to the country, he said the government has taken all necessary preparations to ensure his highest level of security.
