More than 149 tourists, including women and children, were stranded on Char Abdullah, an island in the Meghna River in Lakshmipur’s Ramgati upazila, after adverse weather conditions disrupted their return journey.

According to local sources, the tourists traveled to the river island on several engine-powered boats and trawlers for a recreational trip on Friday afternoon (May 29). Shortly after their arrival, the area was hit by strong winds and rain, while rough conditions in the Meghna River made it unsafe for vessels to operate.

As of 11:30pm, the stranded visitors had not been able to return to the mainland.

Police have been deployed to assist with rescue efforts, officials said.

Liton Dewan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramgati Police Station, said, "Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure the safe return of all stranded tourists."

“Low tide is currently prevailing in the river, so we are waiting for the tide to rise. Once conditions improve, necessary measures will be taken to bring everyone back safely,” he added.

Char Abdullah and the adjacent embankment area along the Meghna River have become a popular tourist destination, especially during holidays and Eid festivities. Often referred to by locals as “Mini Cox’s Bazar,” the scenic riverfront attracts visitors from Lakshmipur and neighbouring districts.
