Over 150 workers were injured in Gazipur’s Shreepur area after panicking and rushing down from a multi-storey building during the 5.7-magnitude earthquake that struck at 10:38am on Friday morning (November 21).

The incident took place at Denimach, a garment factory at Kewa East Khondo in Garopara.

According to Gazipur District Civil Surgeon Mamunur Rahman, 130 workers were admitted to Shreepur Upazila Health Complex, while 20 others were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Witnesses said fear spread among workers when the quake began, and many tried to descend simultaneously, leading to injuries from stampedes.

Some workers alleged that the factory gate was not opened immediately, increasing panic and the number of casualties.

Shreepur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Shafiqul Islam confirmed that medical teams were treating a large number of injured workers, most of whom were hurt while rushing to exit the building in panic.
