Over 5,000 tonnes of green chillies to arrive from India, prices may drop

The government has allowed the import of green chillies from India after nearly nine months to keep prices under control in the domestic market. In the first phase, 5,150 tonnes of green chillies will be imported through the Hili land port. Traders expect this to bring down prices in the market.

Uzzal Hossain, sub-assistant officer of the Hili Plant Quarantine Department, confirmed the matter on Monday (August 3).

It has been learned that production of green chillies has dropped in various parts of the country due to floods, leading to a price surge in the market. Currently, green chillies are selling at Tk 300 to Tk 400 per kg in different parts of the country. In the Hili market too, prices vary between Tk 280 and Tk 300 per kg depending on quality .

Following government approval, 16 companies have been permitted to import green chillies through the Hili land port. The last time green chillies were imported through this port was on November 20, 2025.

Traders in the Hili market said recent rainfall has reduced production, causing prices to rise. Once imports from India begin, supply in the market will increase and prices will come down.

An importer said that after obtaining the necessary Import Permit (IP), green chillies from India will start arriving from Tuesday (August 4) morning.

Uzzal Hossain, sub-assistant officer of the Hili Plant Quarantine Department, said 16 importers have currently been permitted to import 5,150 tonnes of green chillies. This quantity may be increased if necessary.
