Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir may visit Bangladesh for three days to boost cooperation in trade and defence, according to diplomatic sources.

Although Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has not officially confirmed the visit, sources indicate that the trip may take place as part of major geopolitical shifts in the region. The visit would mark a significant step towards rebuilding diplomatic relations between Dhaka and Islamabad after decades of tension, analysts say.

The proposal for a visit by Pakistan's top leaders comes amid discussions on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's possible visit to China, adding particular importance to the development in regional politics, according to analysts. If the visit materialises, issues such as trade expansion, industrial and defence cooperation, and improved regional connectivity are expected to feature prominently.

The most discussed aspect of the visit could be defence cooperation. While relations in this sector have remained limited since 1971, discussions may now include assistance in advanced military technology such as drones and missile systems. Joint military training, exchange of defence personnel, and enhanced security coordination may also be on the table. However, no official announcement has been made by either side.

Relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan began to warm after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in mid-2024, particularly following the formation of an interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus. Since then, new possibilities have emerged, including the opening of direct sea trade routes, increased travel facilities, and enhanced investment and security cooperation.
