Bangladesh, Cyprus vie for UNGA Presidency as Palestine withdraws
Palestine has withdrawn its candidature for the presidency of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), paving the way for Bangladesh to compete with Cyprus, according to diplomatic sources.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has nominated Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman for the position. Bangladesh had initially floated its candidature ahead of Palestine.
The election for the UNGA president, representing the Asia-Pacific group for the 2026–27 term, will be held in June at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Bangladesh’s previous experience includes the late Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury, who served as UNGA president for the 41st session in 1986–87.
