Officers and employees of the Palli Bidyut Samity (Rural Electrification Association) have announced an indefinite nationwide strike from Sunday, demanding elimination of workplace discrimination, reform of the rural electricity sector, and an end to harassing measures.

The strike was announced on Saturday (6 September) at a press conference organised at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity by Anju Rani Malakar, Deputy Secretary of the Palli Bidyut Association.

She stated that although the government has repeatedly promised to form committees and resolve the issues, the Ministry of Power has not implemented these assurances. Officers and employees involved in the movement are being harassed through dismissals, transfers, and other punitive actions, leading to deep discontent among Palli Bidyut officials.

At the press conference, the association demanded that the dismissal orders of unfairly terminated officers and employees be revoked, and that administrative and legal actions be taken against corrupt officers and employees of the Rural Electrification Board.
