A couple in Barishal’s Bakerganj upazila beat their drug-addicted son, 20-year-old Hasan Gazi, to death and later surrendered to the police.

The incident took place around 2:30pm on Tuesday (July 29) in Sahebganj village under Bakerganj municipality.

The victim’s parents, Jafar Gazi and 38-year-old Nazma Begum, went to Bakerganj Police Station around 3:30pm, admitted to killing their son, and requested the police to arrest them.

Bakerganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kalam Azad said, “Initial investigations suggest that Hasan, who was addicted to drugs, would often demand money from his parents. On Tuesday afternoon, when they refused, he began vandalizing furniture in the house. As his parents attempted to intervene, a scuffle broke out. At one point, they struck him with an iron pipe, hitting his head and neck, which led to his death on the spot.”

Later, police recovered the body from the family's home and took it to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead. The body was then sent to the morgue at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

OC Abul Kalam Azad added that legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident.
