Patuakhali-1 by-polls on November 26

The by-election to Patuakhali-1 constituency will be held on November 26. Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam made the announcement today after a meeting of the commissioners.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal presided over the meeting which had started at 11 am. Four other election commissioners were also present there. After the meeting, the EC Secretary said, "Candidates will be able to submit their nomination papers till November 1, while the last date to withdraw them is November 9."

Earlier, the constituency was declared vacant on Sunday following the death of lawmaker Shahjahan Miah. He served as the president of Patuakhali District Awami League from 1991 to December 2019. Shahjahan Miah was elected Member of Parliament from Patuakhali-1 (Patuakhali Sadar, Mirzaganj, Dumki) as a candidate of Awami League in the national parliamentary election of 1996, 2008 and 2018.
