The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Tarique Rahman on Thursday (January 22) urged people to protect the country and its citizens from what he described as “deceivers,” saying only those committed to Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty could safeguard democratic rights.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Narsingdi ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, Tarique Rahman referred to recent earthquakes as a warning and called for vigilance against hypocrisy and deception.

The rally, organised by the Narsingdi district BNP, was held near the municipal park area along the Dhaka–Sylhet highway shortly after midnight.

He criticised political leaders who, he said, leave the country during crises and contrasted them with former prime minister Khaleda Zia, whom he described as firmly rooted in Bangladesh. He said the country must be rebuilt by those who remain committed to its soil.

Referring to the mass protests of 5 August 2024, Rahman said people from all walks of life had played a role in defending independence and restoring fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and the right to vote. He alleged that over the past 15 years, citizens were denied the opportunity to hold public rallies and participate in credible elections.

The BNP chairperson also accused previous administrations of allowing large-scale capital flight, which he said had contributed to poor infrastructure, deteriorating public services and rising unemployment.

Reiterating BNP’s campaign message, Tarique Rahman urged voters to support the party’s 'Dhaner Shish' symbol in the upcoming election, saying a BNP victory would put Bangladesh on a path of progress. He also introduced BNP-nominated candidates for the five parliamentary constituencies in Narsingdi.

The rally was attended by senior BNP leaders, including standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, as well as local and central party officials.
