Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Sunday said that the people of Bangladesh are the ultimate source of all political power, both for the country and for BNP.

Speaking at a student rally organized by the BNP’s student wing at Shahbagh in Dhaka, held to mark the first anniversary of the July mass uprising, Tarique Rahman paid homage to the student activists who sacrificed their lives during the movement.

“Hundreds of student leaders and activists were injured and killed in the July uprising. Over 2,000 student activists were arrested during this period,” he said. “No one can suppress the leaders and activists of an organization that has brave sons and daughters like you.”

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s progress since independence, Tarique said, “It has been 54 years since independence. Bangladesh is now a mature nation where people desire unity and reject division.”

He called for a politics focused on improving people’s quality of life rather than empty rhetoric. “We have embarked on politics that aim to raise living standards,” he added.

Addressing the students, Tarique emphasized the need to acquire technical skills to stay competitive in the global arena. “If BNP comes to power, technical education will be introduced from the school level,” he promised.
