BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the people will prove in the upcoming election that Bangladesh is truly a non-communal country.

He made the remark on Monday, October 13, while speaking to journalists after a meeting with leaders of the Christian Forum at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.

At the time, he urged that the issue of adopting a proportional representation (PR) system for elections be left to the next parliament to decide.

“Efforts are underway to ensure a free and fair election,” Fakhrul said. “However, there are visible attempts to disrupt that process.”

Commenting on the PR system debate, he said, “The sudden demand for PR has created confusion among those who are eager for an early election. Therefore, this matter should be left for the next parliament to decide which system will be used in future elections.”

Speaking about the parliamentary structure, Fakhrul noted that the BNP has proposed forming an upper house, which would be a new experience for Bangladesh. However, he described the proposal for the lower house as unrealistic.
