People’s welfare, peace and stability top government priorities: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that improving the living standards of the people and bringing meaningful changes to their lives are the government’s foremost priorities.

Addressing a fish fry release programme in the Brahmaputra River at Pakundia in Kishoreganj on Sunday (August 16), the prime minister said the government would focus on initiatives that directly benefit the people.

“We want to do whatever serves the interests of the people,” he said.

Tarique said his government would not undertake any initiative that goes against the interests of the country or its people. Maintaining peace and stability and ensuring public welfare would remain central to its policies, he added.

He also urged people to remain alert to those who seek to obstruct national development or create disorder and undermine peace and stability.

On fisheries development, the prime minister said the government would gradually release fish fry into canals and water bodies across the country. The initiative, he said, would help expand the country’s fish resources while making fish more accessible to ordinary people.

Turning to agriculture, Tarique Rahman said the government would stand by farmers within its capacity and continue supporting the sector to protect their interests and promote agricultural development.

The prime minister also announced measures to expand educational opportunities for women. He said female students would receive free education up to the undergraduate level, while scholarships would be provided to students who achieve good results.

In addition, the government plans to provide school uniforms and bags to 120,000 underprivileged students across the country, he said.
