Per capita income in Dhaka district stands at $5,163: DCCI
The per capita income of residents in Dhaka district currently stands at 5,163 US dollars, nearly double the national average. In addition, 46 percent of the country’s total GDP is generated in Dhaka, while the capital accounts for 40 percent of total employment nationwide.
The information was revealed in the Economic Position Index (EPI) compiled by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
The findings were presented on Saturday, October 25, at the DCCI office in Motijheel, Dhaka. The event was presided over by DCCI President Taskin Ahmed and attended by representatives from international organisations, economists, researchers, university academics, and officials from various public and private institutions.
DCCI’s Acting Secretary General, A.K.M. Asaduzzaman Patwary, presented the keynote paper, noting that a major portion of Bangladesh’s economic activities take place in Dhaka district, which contributes 40 per cent of total employment. Dhaka is considered one of the country’s financial hubs, hosting the head offices of over 750 publicly listed companies.
Asaduzzaman added that 32 percent of Bangladesh’s urban population resides in Dhaka district, while the district is home to 11.2 percent of the country’s total population. Dhaka is also a highly industrialised region, contributing over 40 percent of the country’s total exports. Altogether, the district alone accounts for 46 percent of Bangladesh’s gross domestic product (GDP).
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the country’s national per capita income in the 2024–25 fiscal year stands at 2,820 US dollars, the highest on record, marking an increase of 82 dollars from the previous fiscal year’s figure of 2,738 dollars.
The DCCI stated that the estimate for Dhaka’s per capita income was based on BBS’s 2011 district-wise GDP data, taking into account investment, consumption, expenditure, imports, exports, area, and population growth. However, several participants at the event raised concerns about the limitations and accuracy of these estimates.
