Pir Shamim, who was beaten and hacked to death in Daulatpur, Kushtia, was buried at a local graveyard under tight security provided by law enforcement agencies on Sunday, April 12. However, 24 hours after the incident, no case has been filed at Daulatpur Police Station, and no arrests have been made. An uneasy silence prevails in the area.

The attack, vandalism and arson at the 'Shamim Baba Darbar Sharif' in Filipnagar union took place on Saturday afternoon. Three devotees of the shrine, Mohon Ali, Jamirun and Jubayer, were also seriously injured in the attack.

Senior officials from police, BGB, army and RAB have visited the scene. Additional police have been deployed in the area.

Daulatpur Police Station OC Arifur Rahman said, "No written complaint has been received from the family yet. No arrests have been made, but police are deployed in the area."

The deceased's elder brother, Fazlur Rahman, said a decision on filing a case would be taken after discussions following the burial.

Kushtia Superintendent of Police Mohammad Jashim Uddin said police were present at the scene during the attack and tried to rescue Shamim, but being outnumbered by the attackers, the situation spiralled out of control. Efforts are underway to identify those involved, he added.

Local lawmaker Reza Ahmmed Bachchu, after visiting the scene, said, "If there are allegations of religious defamation, the state's administration and judiciary exist. No one has been given the right to go on a rampage and kill people. Those involved in the incident will be identified, investigated impartially and brought under the law."
