PM assures to make Cumilla a seperate division
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has indicated a positive response to long-standing demands for upgrading Cumilla into a separate administrative division.
Speaking at a roadside rally held at Lakshmipur Market field in Barura upazila of Cumilla on Saturday afternoon (May 16), the prime minister said the demand would be implemented if it reflects the will of the people.
“If this is truly a public demand, Inshallah it will be implemented,” he told the gathering amid slogans from BNP leaders and activists supporting the proposal.
During the event, party leaders also raised demands for establishing an agricultural university in Cumilla. In response, the prime minister said the proposal would be discussed with the education minister soon and necessary steps would be taken.
Earlier in the day, the prime minister arrived at the rally venue around 11:15am, where party activists welcomed him with applause and slogans. He acknowledged the reception by waving to the crowd.
At the rally, Agriculture Minister Aminur Rashid Yasin formally raised the demand for a separate “Cumilla Division” along with the proposed agricultural university, drawing strong support from attendees.
Local MP and Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Suman also urged upgrading Cumilla to divisional status and expanding bed capacity at Cumilla Sadar Hospital from 250 to 300.
