PM expresses shock over Keraniganj fire, orders probe and aid

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed deep shock and grief over the casualties in the fire at a tin-shed gas lighter factory in Keraniganj.

Prime Minister's Press Secretary Saleh Shibli said, "Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed shock over the deaths in the Keraniganj gas lighter factory fire and has directed concerned authorities to investigate the incident and provide necessary assistance to the victims."

He said the prime minister has spoken with Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain and instructed him to ensure proper treatment for the injured.

Shibli said Tarique Rahman also spoke with local MP Gonesh Chandra Roy, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Dhaka district, and the Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence over the incident.

The prime minister has directed the formation of separate investigation committees during phone conversations to bring those responsible to justice.

Earlier, a devastating fire broke out at a tin-shed gas lighter factory in the Kadamtali Golchattar area of Keraniganj at 1:11 pm on Saturday, April 4. Five people were killed. The fire was brought under control at 4:44 pm, officials said.
