Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday (May 23) inaugurated the re-excavation of the historic ‘Dhorar Khal’ canal in Mymensingh’s Trishal, nearly 47 years after its original excavation was launched by his father, former President Ziaur Rahman.

The inauguration ceremony took place around 2:25pm in Darirampur village under Bailor union of Trishal upazila, where the Prime Minister formally launched the restoration work of the canal.

The canal was first excavated in 1979 as part of a nationwide canal-digging initiative undertaken by then-President Ziaur Rahman to improve irrigation, water management, and rural connectivity across the country.

In a symbolic moment, Tarique Rahman inaugurated the re-excavation project from the same location where his father had once ceremonially begun the canal excavation decades ago.

Following the unveiling of the project plaque, the Prime Minister interacted briefly with local residents, many of whom expressed enthusiasm and appreciation over the restoration initiative. Thousands of people had gathered in the area since morning to witness the event.

Officials said the canal restoration is expected to help improve local water flow, agricultural activities, and drainage management in surrounding areas.

After the programme, the prime minister was scheduled to stay at the Nazrul Academy Dak Banglow in Trishal before later inaugurating the three-day state celebration marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at around 4:30pm.
