PM to hand over new homes to 100 flood-hit families in Banshkhali

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to hand over keys to newly built homes for 100 families left homeless by recent floods in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram.

The handover will take place during the prime minister’s visit to Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar on Sunday (August 9), Chattogram Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mohammad Sharif Uddin said.

The district administration has identified 100 affected families—10 from each of Banshkhali Municipality and nine unions—for the government-funded housing project. Construction of the homes is nearing completion, officials said.

The houses are being built with disaster resilience in mind, using reinforced concrete pillars, timber and corrugated metal sheets. Each 18-by-12-foot house will have two rooms and an attached 5-by-5-foot toilet.

Former Banshkhali mayor Kamrul Islam Hossaini said the beneficiaries were selected from families whose homes were destroyed in the floods and who lack the financial means to rebuild.

“The prime minister will hand over the keys to 100 flood-affected families in Banshkhali on Sunday,” Sharif Uddin said, adding that the homes are being constructed with funding from the Local Government Division.

The initiative is aimed at providing immediate shelter to families who lost their homes in the flooding while improving their ability to withstand future natural disasters.
