Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the Awami League, is set to officially commence the campaign for 12th national elections from Sylhet on December 20. Party's General Secretary Obaidul Quader said this on Sunday while talking to reporters at the Dhanmondi party office. He said: "The election campaign is set to kick off on December 20 with a visit to the shrines in Sylhet. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit to shrines of Shahjalal and Shah Paran. Following the visits, a public meeting will take place, marking the inaugural election rally." The Awami League has nominated candidates for 298 seats to contest nationwide in the upcoming 12th parliamentary election. The 12th Jatiya Sangsad election is set to be held on January 7.

আগামী ২০ ডিসেম্বর সিলেট থেকে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের প্রচারণা আওয়ামী লীগের সভানেত্রী প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা শুরু করবেন বলে জানিয়েছেন দলটির সাধারণ সম্পাদক এবং সড়ক পরিবহন ও সেতুমন্ত্রী ওবায়দুল কাদের। রোববার (১০ ডিসেম্বর) ধানমন্ডিতে দলীয় কার্যালয়ে সাংবাদিকদের সঙ্গে আলাপকালে তিনি এ কথা বলেন। ওবায়দুল কাদের বলেন, “২০ ডিসেম্বর সিলেটে মাজার জিয়ারতের মধ্য দিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নির্বাচনি প্রচারণা শুরু হবে। এদিন শাহজালাল ও শাহ পরানের মাজার পরিদর্শন করবেন তিনি। পরিদর্শন শেষে উদ্বোধনী নির্বাচনি জনসভা অনুষ্ঠিত হবে।“ আসন্ন দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে দেশজুড়ে ২৯৮টি আসনে প্রার্থীদের মনোনয়ন দিয়েছে আওয়ামী লীগ। ঘোষিত তপশিল অনুযায়ী আগামী ৭ জানুয়ারি অনুষ্ঠিত হবে জাতীয় নির্বাচন।
