Poet Al Mahmud's 90th birth anniversary today
Today marks the 90th birth anniversary of legendary poet Al Mahmud — celebrated for his evocative verses on love, nature, devotion, and patriotism.
His birthday anniversary is being observed on Friday with deep admiration and heartfelt tributes.
Born on July 11, 1936, in Maurail village of Brahmanbaria, Al Mahmud emerged as one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in modern Bangla poetry. He passed away in Dhaka on February 15, 2019, but his words continue to resonate across generations.
To mark this special occasion, fans, literary organisations, and cultural institutions are hosting a range of commemorative events. A central program of discussion, remembrance, and poetry recitation will be held at 4.00pm at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital, organised by Kaler Kalas and Kaler Dhwani. Renowned figures from the worlds of literature and the arts are expected to attend and reflect on Al Mahmud's legacy.
In Mymensingh, the Mymensingh Sahitya Sangsad is holding a seminar titled "Our Al Mahmud", highlighting the poet's life, work, and influence on Bengali literature and thought.
Additionally, Bangla Academy has announced that it will host a special seminar later this month to commemorate the poet's contributions. Another event featuring poetry readings and memoir sharing is scheduled to take place at the MBA building of Dhaka University at 4.00pm on July 12.
Fans and followers have also called for national recognition of Al Mahmud's birth anniversary, emphasizing his literary contributions and his role in inspiring social and political consciousness, particularly during the July Revolution. They also expressed disappointment over what they described as the neglect and marginalization the poet faced during previous regimes.
