Police announce reward to identify suspect in attempted rape of JnU student
Police have announced a reward for information leading to the identification of a suspect involved in the attempted rape of a female student of Jahangirnagar University (JnU).
In an urgent public notice issued on Saturday (May 16), Police Headquarters sought public assistance in identifying the man seen in CCTV footage connected to the incident.
Authorities requested anyone with credible information regarding the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to contact them via WhatsApp at 01320-089305, assuring that the informant’s identity would remain strictly confidential and that a suitable reward would be provided.
Law enforcement officials said efforts to identify and arrest the suspect have intensified since the incident was reported.
Earlier on Friday evening, university Proctor A K M Rashidul Alam shared details from CCTV footage analysis during a press briefing. According to him, the suspect had been roaming around different parts of the campus for nearly four and a half hours before the attack and repeatedly changed his movement routes.
The footage reportedly shows the suspect entering the campus through the Bishmile Gate adjacent to the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at 6:58pm on the day of the incident. He was later seen moving through several areas of the campus, including the university school area, Prantik Gate, Women’s Club, Chourangi intersection, and nearby residential zones.
Police said the suspect was also spotted multiple times near the area where the attack later occurred. According to the timeline provided by the university administration, the final suspicious movement was recorded shortly before 11:13 pm — the approximate time the student was allegedly dragged into nearby bushes in an attempted rape and murder attack.
The incident took place last Tuesday night in a secluded area between the old Fazilatunnesa Hall and the extended section of Al-Beruni Hall on the university campus. University authorities later filed a case with Ashulia Police Station against unidentified individuals.
Police and university authorities say coordinated efforts are underway to bring the accused to justice as outrage continues to grow over the incident.
