Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the police are not guardians of any political party; they are employees of the state, funded by taxpayers’ money.

He made the remarks on Sunday morning while addressing the passing-out parade of Assistant Superintendents of Police at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi.

He said the core responsibility of the police force is to serve the people and ensure the rule of law.

Referring to election-time duties, the Home Affairs Adviser said that peace cannot be established merely through the use of force without earning public trust. He added that the police force is fully prepared to ensure that the upcoming national parliamentary election is held in a free, fair, and neutral manner.

He said that around 100,000 police personnel have been given special training to ensure security during the election period.

The adviser stressed that police officers must maintain absolute neutrality while performing election duties and must not accept any unethical benefits or hospitality. If any disorder occurs at polling centres, it must be strictly suppressed in accordance with the instructions of the Returning Officer.

Mentioning that professional life may involve pressure and criticism, he said that honesty and patriotism ensure that nothing can hinder the fulfilment of duty.

He called for building a humane, courageous, and dignified police force free from corruption and bias, upholding the sacrifices of the people and the expectations of future generations.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, and Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy Towfik Mahbub Chowdhury were present at the ceremony.

A total of 96 trainee officers of the 41st BCS Police batch, which began training on February 15, 2025, formally entered their professional careers through the passing-out parade.

The parade included 87 officers from the 41st BCS Police batch, along with one from the 28th BCS, three from the 35th BCS, one from the 36th BCS, two from the 37th BCS, and two from the 40th BCS, all participating as Assistant Superintendents of Police.

The parade commander was trainee Assistant Superintendent of Police Dhiman Kumar Mondol.

As recognition of excellence during the long training period, trainee Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sazzad Hossain was awarded Best Probationer, Mehdi Arif received the Best Academic Award, Sajib Hossain won the Best in Field Activities Award, Mosleh Uddin Ahmed received the Best Horsemanship Award, and Salman Faruq was honoured as Best Shooter.
