Police arrest two including Jubo Dal leader over alleged gang rape in Sonargaon

Police have arrested two individuals, including a local Jubo Dal leader, in connection with the alleged gang rape of a woman in Sonargaon, Narayanganj. Efforts are underway to apprehend other suspects involved in the incident, law enforcement said.

The incident took place on Friday night, June 12, in the Sirab area of Jampur union under the upazila. Following a complaint, police launched an operation and made the arrests.

The arrestees have been identified as Md Shahid Mia, 40, general secretary of Jampur union ward no 2 unit of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, and Shahin Mia of the same area.

According to police and the case filing, the victim, who lived with her husband and children in a rented house in the Sirab area, was forcibly taken by several individuals to a room on the ground floor of a building while she was working in her kitchen on Wednesday afternoon. She was allegedly gang raped there.

After the incident, the victim filed a written complaint with Sonargaon Police Station on Friday morning. Based on the complaint, police conducted a raid and arrested the two from the Sirab area. A regular case was subsequently filed at the police station.

The arrestees were produced before a court on Saturday morning, June 13, and were sent to jail by court order. The victim has been admitted to Narayanganj General Hospital for medical treatment and necessary forensic tests.

Sonargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Golam Sarwar said two individuals have been arrested over the alleged gang rape. Police operations are ongoing to identify and arrest the remaining accused.
