Police ASI accused of drunk behaviour, throwing toll money into river

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police in Narayanganj has been accused of vandalising a ferry ghat in a drunken state, throwing toll money into the river and dancing in public. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

The accused officer is Mannan, who was serving as an ASI at Narayanganj Sadar Naval Police Station. After the video surfaced, he was withdrawn from the station and attached to police lines. A two-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

Police said the incident took place on Friday evening, September 4, when ASI Mannan began behaving erratically, dancing and singing at the ghat. He allegedly threw toll money into the river and vandalised the area, drawing a crowd of onlookers.

Following the video's circulation on social media, he was withdrawn and a probe committee was formed. The committee is headed by Narayanganj Sadar Naval Police Station OC Rokibuzzaman, with SI Faruk Ahmed Patwari as a member.

An official of the same station, speaking on condition of anonymity, said ASI Mannan suffers from a mental illness and is undergoing treatment. He joined the station about 20 days ago and had previously served with RAB-3.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj Naval Police Ariful Islam said the matter is being investigated. "We cannot say conclusively whether ASI Mannan was intoxicated or suffering from a mental illness until the investigation is completed," he said.
