Police block ‘March to Indian Assistant High Commission’ protest in Rajshahi
Police blocked a march towards the office of the Assistant High Commission of India in Rajshahi.
The demonstration began around 12:30pm from Smriti Omlan Chattar in the city’s Bhadra Mor area, chanting various slogans including “Nara-e-Takbeer,” “Delhi or Dhaka—Dhaka, Dhaka.”
Anticipating unrest, police erected barricades to halt the march’s advance. When protesters attempted to remove the barriers and move forward, officers intervened and blocked their progress, leading to a brief standoff.
The programme titled, ‘March to Indian Assistant High Commission,’ was organised under the banner of the “Bharityo Adhipotto Birodhi July 36 Mancha.”
Miftahul Jannat, one of the protesters, accused police of obstructing a peaceful demonstration and said participants would not back down.
Responding to the incident, Farhad Hossain, additional deputy commissioner of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (Boalia Zone), said, "Police action was taken to maintain public order."
“The protesters’ demands had already been conveyed to the relevant authorities through the media,” he added.
