Police charge batons during clash with RMG workers in Mirpur
Garment workers staged protests in the capital’s Mirpur area, demanding that the minimum monthly wage be fixed at Tk 30,000.
The workers began their demonstrations on Sunday (November 1) morning by blocking roads at several locations in Mirpur. Clashes broke out between the protesters and police in several rounds as law enforcers attempted to remove them from the streets.
According to eyewitnesses, workers took positions on the main roads around Mirpur-10 roundabout and Mirpur-11 from around 8:30 am. Their demonstrations brought traffic on major roads in the area to a standstill, triggering severe congestion and causing considerable suffering for commuters, students and other members of the public.
Police used water cannons, tear gas and sound grenades to bring the situation under control. Clashes and chases and counter-chases between the workers and police followed.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jalal Uddin said workers had been protesting on the streets since morning in Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-12 and surrounding areas.
Additional police personnel have been deployed to manage the situation, he said, adding that police were working to clear the roads and remove the protesters.
