Police constable jumps into river to save woman in Brahmanbaria

A police constable risked his life to rescue a 24-year-old woman after she jumped into the Titas River in Brahmanbaria on Tuesday night (August 25).

Constable Amit Hasan immediately jumped into the river after seeing the woman leap from a bridge in the Shimrail Kandi area around 10pm. He was visiting the Sheikh Hasina Bridge area with fellow constables Md Faisal and Ifran Mahmud when they witnessed the incident.

Amit swam towards the woman and managed to pull her to safety. With assistance from a boat, he brought her to the riverbank before she was taken to Brahmanbaria 250-bed General Hospital for treatment.

Police said Amit had been out with his batchmates for snacks as part of a farewell gathering for him when the incident occurred.

Inspector Nasir Uddin, in-charge of Brahmanbaria's No. 1 Town Police Outpost, visited the hospital, contacted the woman's family and monitored her condition. She was later handed over to her mother and sister around midnight.

According to the woman's mother, her daughter had married a man from Radhika-Jagatsar village about six months ago and had been living with him in Narayanganj. She returned to her parents' home around three months ago following marital problems.

Police suspect family conflict or a dispute with her husband may have prompted the woman to attempt suicide. Inspector Nasir said the matter would be investigated and necessary action taken.

Local residents and the woman's family praised Amit for his courage and quick response, which they said saved her life.
