Police constable's body recovered from washroom in Gaibandha

The body of a police constable, Habibur Rahman (33), was recovered from the washroom of the barracks at the official residence of the Superintendent of Police in Gaibandha. Police initially said he had committed suicide during a video call with his wife following a family dispute.

His body was recovered from the barracks of the SP's official residence in the city around 3:30pm on Wednesday, August 26. The matter was confirmed around 6:30pm by Additional Superintendent of Police (B Circle) Sheikh Muttajul Islam of Gaibandha.

The deceased, Habibur Rahman, was the son of Montu Mia of Sardarpada area under Sadar upazila of Nilphamari. He is survived by a son aged 5 to 7 years, it has been learned.

Police sources said Habibur joined as a guard at the Gaibandha SP's official residence on August 12. On Wednesday afternoon, colleagues grew suspicious when the washroom door of the barracks remained closed for a long time. Guard Commander Sohel Mia called out several times but received no response. He then opened the door with the help of other members and entered. Inside, they found Habibur hanging from a rod with a towel wrapped around his neck.

He was later recovered dead. Police prepared an inquest report in the presence of Executive Magistrate Sabbir Hossain.

Gaibandha Sadar Police Station OC Nazmul said Habibur had an argument with his wife over the phone during a video call around noon. At one point, he entered the washroom and committed suicide while still on a video call with his wife, according to preliminary information.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Muttajul Islam said the incident is believed to have occurred due to a family dispute. The matter is being investigated. The body has been sent to Gaibandha General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
