Police have been deployed at the house of popular Baul singer Shafi Mandal after the alleged Pir Shamim Reza Jahangir was beaten and hacked to death in Daulatpur, Kushtia, on charges of insulting the Quran. The local administration has taken this step as a security measure to avoid any kind of unpleasant situation.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station Arifur Rahman confirmed this and said that the police have been deployed for security reasons. However, the police do not have any specific threat or information about the Baul singer's house.

In this regard, Baul artist Shafi Mandal said that he has been staying in Dhaka for the past one month and is not aware of the details of what is happening in the village. However, his daughter Leena Mandal said that her father is a spiritual musician and travels to various courts for the purpose of singing. He also visited the Darbar Sharif and some of his pictures and videos there have been circulated on social media.

Leena Mandal alleged that a group used the video circulating on the internet to create an atmosphere of 'mob panic' or mass beating, as a result of which Pir Shamim became a victim. She also said that her father practices the philosophy of Lalon Shah. Despite ideological differences, they respect religious values and Islamic customs.

Last Saturday, a group of locals attacked the so-called Pir Shamim Reza Jahangir on charges of insulting the Quran. At that time, he was beaten and hacked to death, and the Darbar Sharif was vandalized and set on fire. Three followers of the deceased were injured in the incident.

The deceased Shamim was the head of the Darbar Sharif. His body was handed over to his family after an autopsy at the 250-bed General Hospital in Kushtia on Sunday. He was buried after a funeral at the southwest Philipnagar cemetery in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, police said that no case has been filed in the incident so far. The deceased's elder brother, Fazlur Rahman, said that they will decide on further legal action after discussing with the family members.
