Police have been deployed at the grave of 'pir' Shamim Reza Jahangir, who was killed in a recent mob attack in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia after rumours spread that his body might be exhumed.

The security measure was taken on Friday (April 17) in the Philipnagar area following concerns over possible attempts to remove the body of Jahangir from his grave.

Jahangir was killed on April 11 when an agitated mob attacked, vandalised and set fire to the ‘Shamim Baba Darbar Sharif’ in the Darogar Mor area. He was buried the following day.

A murder case has been filed with Daulatpur Police Station by the victim’s elder brother, naming former district leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Mohammad Khaja Ahmed, as the prime accused, along with 180–200 unidentified individuals.

According to locals, tensions escalated after a video circulated on social media alleging that the 'Pir' had made blasphemous remarks during an event, triggering the attack.

Additional Superintendent of Police Delwar Hossain said authorities have warned followers that exhumation without legal approval is a punishable offence.

He added that they have assured police no such attempt will be made.
