Police detain 254 more in anti-gang drive across Cumilla

Police hava detained 254 people in a fresh anti-teen gang crackdown across all 18 police stations in Cumilla district.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfor Rahman said the operation was conducted from Saturday evening until midnight in different parts of the district on the orders of Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman.

Senior district police officials also took part in the drive, he added.

Police said the detainees are being screened to determine whether they have links to criminal activities. Legal action will be taken against those found to be involved in crimes, officials said.

The district police said such operations are being conducted regularly to prevent teenagers from becoming involved in criminal activities, curb gang culture and maintain law and order.

Earlier on Wednesday, police detained 624 people during a similar overnight operation across Cumilla’s 18 police stations. Of them, 451 were released into the custody of their guardians after signing undertakings, while legal action was taken against the remaining 173 on various allegations, including drug use, criminal cases, links to a banned organisation and outstanding arrest warrants.
