Police detain security guard over assault of street child in Mirpur

The police on Monday detained a security guard of Shah Ali Shopping Complex in Mirpur for allegedly beating a street child with a belt following an alleged theft.

The arrestee was identified as Md Ripon Mondal, 36. He was undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar under police guard, said Darus Salam police station inspector (investigation) Nazmul Hasan Khan.

‘We have taken him into police custody, and legal action against him is under way,’ inspector Nazmul told New Age.

A video showing Ripon holding the child by one hand and repeatedly hitting him with a belt outside the shopping complex went viral on social media on Sunday.

The police said the incident took place in front of Shah Ali Shopping Complex in Mirpur 1 on Saturday.

Ripon fell ill on Sunday and was admitted to the hospital.

The police were also searching for the child.
