Police foiled a march by primary school teachers towards Jamuna on Monday (September 15), using water cannons and sound grenades to disperse the protesters.

The teachers had been demanding the nationalisation of 5,000 private primary schools that were excluded from the recommendations of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education’s Consultation Committee.

The march began around 4pm from in front of the National Press Club, with demonstrators heading towards the residence of the Chief Adviser. Police intercepted them near the Kodom Fountain adjacent to the High Court, where water cannons and sound grenades were used to break up the protest.

The teachers later retreated and returned to the Press Club area.

Thousands of teachers from across the country joined under the banner of the Bangladesh Private Primary School Teachers’ Union Council, pressing for their schools’ inclusion in the nationalisation process.
