Police foil robbery bid in Chakaria, arrest 5 with weapons
Chakaria police have arrested five members of an armed robbery gang while they were preparing to commit a robbery, along with locally made weapons and a CNG-run autorickshaw.
The arrests were made on Monday evening, May 25, from near the Amaniyar Char bridge on the Chakaria-Betua Bazar road in Halakara area of Chakaria municipality's Ward No. 2. The arrested are Ayub Ali, 42; Ibrahim Sohel, 27; Abu Hanif, 29; Saiful Islam, 20; and Nazim Uddin, 48.
Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Monir Hossain confirmed the matter on Tuesday afternoon, May 26.
During the operation, police recovered a CNG autorickshaw, a bamboo pole, an iron digging tool, a sharp knife and a sharp dao used in robberies.
Based on secret information and technical assistance, police learned that a group of robbers were gathered near the Amaniyar Char bridge area preparing for a robbery. When police conducted a raid, the gang members tried to flee. After a chase, five were detained along with a CNG.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrested confessed to targeting passengers on vehicles travelling on that road for robberies for a long time, police claimed. A case has been filed against them under sections 399/402 of the Penal Code at Chakaria Police Station.
The OC said special operations will continue to curb robberies and other crimes in the Chakaria police station area. Cox's Bazar district police are working professionally to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
