Police must never serve any political party: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday (August 2) has said that Bangladesh Police must never become an instrument of any political party or group, urging newly commissioned officers to uphold the rule of law with professionalism, integrity and political neutrality.

Addressing the passing-out parade of the first phase of the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah of Rajshahi, the minister said building a modern, technology-driven and people-oriented police force free from political influence remained a national priority.

"Police are not the enforcement arm of any political party or group," he said. "They must earn public trust through impartial policing, zero tolerance for corruption and unwavering commitment to the rule of law."

The minister urged the new officers to discharge their duties with professionalism while maintaining the chain of command and contributing to a society based on equality, justice and public confidence in law enforcement.

He also called on the officers to embrace the ideals of those who sacrificed their lives during Bangladesh's Liberation War and the 2024 student-led mass uprising, saying the country's evolving realities demand an accountable and service-oriented police force.

Highlighting emerging security challenges, Salahuddin stressed the need to strengthen technical capabilities to combat cybercrime and safeguard digital security. He said police officers should see themselves as trusted public servants committed to protecting citizens rather than exercising authority.

The ceremony marked the completion of six months of basic training for 58 trainee Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), who formally entered the service after beginning their training on Feb. 1, 2026.

Land Minister Md. Mizanur Rahman Minu, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and Bangladesh Police Academy Principal Additional IGP G.M. Azizur Rahman attended the ceremony as special guests.

Trainee ASP Dr. Md. Nurul Huda Usthay, who commanded the parade, received the awards for Best Probationer and Best in Field Activities. Trainee ASP Abu Numan Mohammad Khairul Islam won the Best Academic Award, while Trainee ASP A.B.M. Mamun was named Best Shooter.

The home minister presented awards to the top-performing trainees at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The newly commissioned ASPs will now be deployed to various units of Bangladesh Police for practical field training.
