Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the police are not the protectors of any political party but serve as government employees funded by taxpayers.

He made the remarks while addressing the Passing Out Parade of Assistant Police Superintendents at the Saradha Police Academy in Rajshahi on Sunday morning (January 18).

"The primary responsibility of the police is to serve the public and uphold the rule of law," he said.

Regarding election duties, the adviser said that protecting human dignity and ensuring law and order largely depend on the conduct of field-level police. “Peace cannot be maintained by force alone without gaining the trust of the people,” he added.

He assured that the police force is fully prepared to ensure a free, fair, and impartial national parliamentary election, and nearly 100,000 police personnel have received special training for election security.

He further stressed that police officers must remain completely neutral while performing electoral duties and must not accept any unethical advantages or hospitality. Any disorder at polling stations should be strictly controlled according to the instructions of the Returning Officer.

The parade marked the formal entry into active service for 96 trainees of the 41st BCS (Police) Batch, which began training on February 15, 2025. In addition to 87 trainees of the 41st batch, participants included one from the 28th BCS, three from the 35th BCS, one from the 36th BCS, two from the 37th BCS, and two from the 40th BCS.
