A police constable’s objectionable Facebook post about the July uprising has triggered protests in Kushtia, with activists blocking a major highway demanding disciplinary action.

Leaders and members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement staged a demonstration on the Kushtia-Ishwardi highway outside the Police Superintendent’s office from 9:30 PM to 1:00 AM on Tuesday night. Protesters set tires on fire and chanted slogans condemning the police’s stance.

The police constable in question, Farzul Islam, a member of the Kushtia traffic police, allegedly made inappropriate remarks regarding the month of July on his Facebook account. The comments sparked outrage, especially given the historical context of police violence during July last year in Kushtia, when students and civilians were reportedly shot.

Mostafizur Rahman, member secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s Kushtia branch, said, “Last July, police opened fire on students and citizens, killing several. Despite ongoing threats from Awami League-affiliated groups, the police continue to act in favor of the ruling party. Comments like these are unacceptable.”

In response, the Kushtia district police canceled Farzul Islam’s leave and attached him to the police lines pending investigation. A three-member inquiry committee has been formed, and police units have been instructed to prevent any remarks against the state or the historic uprising. Authorities warned that any violation of these directives would result in strict legal action.

Later Tuesday night, Farzul Islam claimed his Facebook account had been hacked since the morning and denied making the controversial post.

The protest caused significant traffic disruption, with buses, trucks, and other vehicles stuck on both sides of the highway during the demonstration.
