An assistant sub-inspector of police was found dead inside a washroom at the Iranian Pahar Police Camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.

The deceased was identified as ASI Rubel Hossain, who was posted at the camp. His body was recovered around 5:00am early Saturday (August 8) after police cut open the steel door of the locked washroom.

According to Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman, Rubel was absent from the camp’s roll call on Friday afternoon. Camp personnel subsequently searched for him and tried repeatedly to reach him by phone, but received no response.

The following morning, camp cook Sharif went to use the washroom and found the door locked from inside. After receiving no response to repeated knocks, he looked through a window and saw Rubel lying unconscious inside.

Senior camp officials were alerted immediately. Police and a medical professional later arrived at the scene and recovered Rubel’s body after cutting through the door.

A mobile phone, a bath towel, a flashlight and cigarettes reportedly belonging to the officer were recovered from the scene.

Police said their preliminary assessment suggests that Rubel may have suffered a stroke while using the washroom. However, the exact cause of death will be determined after an autopsy and further legal investigation.
