Campus students have detained a student named Morshed Alam alias Adib, 20, on charges of making indecent comments about female students of the residential hostel of Feni Polytechnic Institute on Facebook and handed him over to police. Later he was released on bond as the institute authorities did not file any written complaint.

The incident took place around 11:30pm on Monday (August 31). Morshed is a third-semester student of the Electrical Department of the institute. Local Chhatra Shibir leaders have claimed him as a worker of the Polytechnic Institute unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

According to police, Polytechnic Institute and residential hostel sources, when the matter of Morshed’s indecent comments on Facebook about the female hostel students became known, the residential students protested at night. At one stage the male hostel students also joined them. Later the students detained Morshed and handed him over to police through the institute authorities.

President of Feni Polytechnic Institute Teachers’ Association GM Tajuddin said Morshed was handed over to police at night. However, as the institute authorities did not file any case or written complaint against him, police released him on bond and handed him back to the college authorities.

Convener of Feni Polytechnic Institute Chhatra Dal Md. Rubel Moghal said recently a few cleaners work in the courtyard of the female hostel. Morshed asked them what they had found from beside the hostel. Later he made indecent comments about the female students and posted on Facebook. In protest against this, the students detained him and handed him over to police.

Rubel also said the students have demanded the transfer of the accused Morshed to another Polytechnic Institute.

President of Feni Polytechnic Institute unit of Chhatra Shibir Khayer Uddin said an unpleasant incident has taken place centering on a social media post of Chhatra Shibir worker Morshed Alam. However, he is not an active worker of Chhatra Shibir. The institute authorities will take decision regarding his offence. As he has no organisational post, there is no scope to take organisational decision against him, he also said.

GM Tajuddin said Morshed apologized to the female students at night and deleted the Facebook post. Later he posted another one seeking apology.

He said initially no legal step was taken against him considering the student’s academic life. However, an investigation committee has been formed in the Academic Council meeting on Tuesday morning regarding the complaint. For the sake of security, Morshed may be transferred to another Polytechnic Institute as per the decision of the investigation committee.

In this regard, Inspector (Investigation) of Feni Model Police Station Sajid Kamal informed that he is on leave. The duty officer of the police station, after checking the register, said he has no information of any student of Polytechnic Institute named Morshed being detained. Attempts were made several times to contact Officer-in-Charge of Feni Model Police Station Aminul Islam and Inspector (Investigation) Sajal Kanti Das in this regard, but they did not receive the phone.
