Police statement over disturbing video showing bodies of woman and her newborn
For the past a few days, a video has been shared on social media claiming that a pregnant woman was murdered after 'gang rape' in a village in Tangail. The viral post also claims that the woman's unborn child was also killed by the perpetrators.
The video shows that the body of her newborn child is lying a short distance from where the woman's body is lying.
While investigating the incident, it was learned that the police dug up the soil in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail and recovered the bodies of the mother and her newborn.
The two bodies were recovered from the bridge of the Louhajang River in Guntia village of Jamurki union of the upazila at 7:30 pm on April 20, said Mirzapur police station inspector (investigation) Russell Ahmed.
Citing locals, the police said that around 6 pm, locals sensed a foul smell in the area. They went to the spot and saw the woman's hair. Then they informed the police. The police dug up the ground and recovered the bodies of the woman and the newborn.
In the presence of the locals, the police dug up the ground and recovered the bodies of the woman and the newborn from a sack. Considering the condition of the bodies, the police believe that the woman was killed and buried 8-10 days ago.
In this regard, Inspector Russell Ahmed said, "When the woman was dug up and brought out, the body of a newborn was found with her. It is believed that the woman was about seven months pregnant. The newborn was delivered at the time of her death. Later, the two were buried. Efforts are underway to identify them."
The bodies have been sent to Tangail Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. He said that the exact cause of death will be known after receiving the report.
It has been learned through proper police channels that operation to identify the victims is ongoing and work is underway to identify those involved in the crime, but it will not be possible to confirm exactly how they died until the detailed forensic report comes.
The police request that the facts of such sensitive incidents be properly verified before disseminating and sharing information on social media.
