Police to face action for providing illegal favors to political leaders: Home Adviser
The Home Affairs Adviser, Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, has warned that strict action will be taken against any police officer providing illegal favors to political leaders or activists.
Speaking to reporters after a core committee meeting at the Home Ministry on Tuesday (November 4), he said, “We have formed an Electoral Inquiry Committee. Any negligence will immediately be brought under legal action — no more delays or just GD entries as before.”
He added, “My instruction to police is clear — the election must be free, fair, credible, and festive. Anyone in the force found involved in unethical activities will face the law.”
Responding to queries, the adviser confirmed that the army currently holds magistracy power, though its use during elections will be decided later.
Regarding possible police reshuffles before the polls, he said officers involved in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections would be replaced as much as possible. “Those engaged in all three will be dropped first, followed by those in two. Due to manpower limits, officers with clean records from one election may still be retained,” he added.
