Police use water cannon, sound grenades to disperse Ebtedayee teachers
Police fired water cannons and sound grenades at Ebtedayi (primary) madrasa teachers protesting for nationalisation and other demands near Dhaka Press Club on Wednesday (October 29).
The protest, which began around 2:15pm, left at least 43 teachers injured. Several of the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Initially, the protesters begun a march toward the Secretariat but were stopped by police. When they attempted to break through barricades, the authorities used water cannons and sound grenades to disperse them.
According to police, the teachers tried to forcefully proceed from beneath the Metro Rail station toward the Secretariat despite repeated warnings.
Shahbagh Police Patrol Inspector Sardar Bulbul Ahmed said, "The teachers were dispersed after attempting to push forward."
