Police-BNP clash in Habiganj, 50 injured including 2 journalists

At least 50 people were injured in the clash between police and BNP over the BNP's human chain in Habiganj. Among them, two journalists were shot. The clash took place in Shaistanagar area of the district city on Sunday (December 10) around 12:30 pm. At this time, shops and some cars were also vandalized.

Locals said that in the afternoon, a human chain was held at Shaistanagar in the city to demand human rights, rule of law and justice on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day on the initiative of the district BNP. At the last stage of the human chain, BNP clashed with the police.

At that time, BNP activists threw bricks at the police. Police fired tearshells to bring the situation under control. Then the chase started. It lasts until half past one. At least 50 people including police, journalists, BNP leaders were injured.

My TV District Representative Niranjan Goswami (30) and Desh TV District Representative Ali Hamza (30) were seriously injured in the clash.

In this regard, Habiganj District Hospital doctor Abu Yusuf told the media that the two journalists who were injured were both shot. They suffered several bullet wounds in their eyes, face and chest. They have been advised to go to Dhaka or Sylhet for better treatment.

Meanwhile, 10 to 12 policemen were injured in the incident, said Habiganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajoy Chandra Deb. He told the media that the BNP activists started throwing bricks at the police from the human chain. When they prepared to attack the police, the police fired shots and calmed down the situation. A suspect was arrested during this incident.

On the other hand, district BNP joint convener Nurul Islam alleged that the police suddenly attacked the peaceful program and created chaos. Hundreds of their activists were shot and injured. Fearing the police, most of the leaders-activists took treatment in different hospitals and clinics of the district headquarters instead of being admitted to the government hospital.
