Abul Kalam, 35, a member of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), has allegedly been called out, beaten, had his arms and legs broken and his leg tendons cut with a sharp weapon in Rupganj of Narayanganj. His family claims drug dealers attacked him for protesting against the drug trade in the area. Abul Kalam is now undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
The incident took place in the North Masabo area of Tarabo municipality in the upazila around 11pm on Thursday. His family said Abul Kalam works in Habiganj and had come home on leave.
Abul Kalam’s sister Sumaiya Akter alleged that drug dealing and drug gatherings took place beside their house, and her brother used to obstruct these activities. Abul Kalam had recently also helped get Shahadat Hossain, 32, and Emdadul Haque, 29, who are involved in the drug trade, arrested. After he returned home on leave, people of Shahadat and Emdad attacked him, Sumaiya claimed, adding that his arms and legs were broken and his leg tendons were cut with a sharp weapon.
Abul Kalam’s father Abdul Malek said a man named Shahjalal phoned his son and called him to a wetland (beel) on Thursday night, where he was attacked. His arms and legs were broken and his leg tendons were cut. The attackers fled when locals came forward hearing his screams.
