Political violence continues at BRUR despite ban, students fume

Despite the 108th Syndicate meeting's decision to ban all forms of student-teacher, official and employee political activities on the Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) campus in Rangpur, the administration and political organisations have paid no heed to it. General students have expressed anger over the continued overt organisational activities of various political groups on campus.

On Monday, August 3, a clash broke out between Chhatra Dal and Shibir over the removal of a banner, leaving at least five people seriously injured and around 20 others wounded. The following day, the campus was gripped by fear as Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal reportedly displayed weapons. The university administration even sought the imposition of Section 144 to avoid further escalation. Students are outraged over the political violence on the campus that was stained with the blood of Shaheed Abu Sayeed and where politics was supposed to be banned.

Students allege that, sycophantic student politics is destroying the academic environment and compromising their safety. They have also accused the Vice-Chancellor of legitimising political activities by attending and speaking at such programmes. They demand that the administration not merely issue declarations but take concrete action.

Md Shahriar Rahman, a student of Political Science, said, "It is extremely concerning that clashes, weapon displays and tense situations continue despite the ban on politics. We do not want political conflict; we want to study in a safe environment. Those violating university rules and destabilising the campus should face action regardless of their affiliation."

Regarding the matter, BRUR Registrar Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman said, "Despite the ban, Chhatra Dal and Shibir submitted applications seeking permission to resume student politics. The administration has formed a committee to decide whether student politics will be allowed or not. We can reach a decision once the committee submits its report. However, the recent incidents are indeed a cause for concern."
