Polytechnic students protest over 6-point demands
The Bangladesh Technical Students' Movement has held a pre-announced programme to achieve its six-point demands. On Sunday (April 27), students are holding protest programmes in all polytechnic institutes across the country, including Dhaka.
On this day, around 10:30 am, students of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute took out a protest procession from the South Gate in Tejgaon in the capital. The procession ended at the North Gate.
Dhaka Polytechnic Institute representative of the Technical Students’ Movement, Mashfiq Islam said, The next program will be announced on our ‘Technical Students’ Movement, Bangladesh’ Facebook page.
More than four lakh polytechnic students across the country have been protesting for several months to achieve their six-point demands. Initially, they submitted a memorandum and held a human chain program. Later, after boycotting classes and exams, they blocked the Satrasta intersection in Tejgaon in the capital on April 16. This led to massive traffic jams in the capital. On the same day, students held blockade programs across the country. Law enforcement officers lathi-charged the students in Comilla. This brought the movement of polytechnic students to the forefront.
On April 17, the polytechnic students announced a nationwide railway blockade program. Later, when they were assured by various levels of the government, the students relaxed the program and sat for discussions. However, since that discussion was not fruitful, they have been holding continuous programs. The next day, Friday (April 18), they also protested with shrouds on their heads. On April 19, at around 12:45 pm, the polytechnic students held the 'Rise in Red' program. The next day (April 20), they held a Dhaka district rally in front of the Women's Polytechnic Institute on the new road in Agargaon from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
